Taiwanese student Hsing-Jung “Catherine” Wu is currently doing a Master's in Business Communication at Rider University. Prior to that, she spent six months studying the Graduate Preparation Program at Kings New Jersey.

She recently took some time from her busy schedule as a graduate student to be interviewed by Campus Support Coordinator Chihae Lee.

Hi Catherine, what program are you currently enrolled in at Rider University?

I am working towards getting a Master's in Business Communication. It is a two-year program.

What classes are you taking this semester?

I’m taking three classes this semester. They are, Strategic Business Writing, Corporate and Persuasive Discourse, and Information Gathering and Analysis.

How will your degree from Rider University help you after you graduate?

Before moving to the United States, I graduated from university in Taipei, Taiwan. My major was insurance, but I didn’t enjoy this field of work. I worked in a public relations agency that hosted conferences to promote entertainment artists. I enjoyed this work, and I want to continue my studies in this field. The major in business and communications works very well with the work I did back in Taiwan.

I hope to return to Taiwan after I graduate from Rider University and continue working in the public relations field. This summer I will go back to Taiwan, and work with my old boss in the public relations company. Both my parents and old boss encouraged me to get my Masters so I can return to Taiwan for better job opportunities.

How long did you study at Kings New Jersey?

I studied for about 6 months at Kings New Jersey and completed Level 3 and 4 of the Graduate Preparation Program.

How did Kings help you prepare for graduate school at Rider University?

They were really helpful. They gave me confidence to speak English through their teaching style. I even wish I stayed longer at Kings because I feel I could have learned even more English to prepare me more for classes at Rider.

Do you have any advice for future Rider University students graduating from the UPP and GPP program at Kings New Jersey?

If you have problems in class, get help! I think especially Asian students they don’t get help. Lots of times people think American student don’t like Chinese students. That’s not true because if we don’t ask for help, we will never do better.
